Author and Illustrator
Emma Middleton is a picture book author, illustrator, children’s performer and former ballerina. She loves animals, children, music, nature, and time to daydream, so it’s no wonder that she lives on the lush green hills of the Sunshine Coast hinterland with her family and pets. Her first childhood ambition was to be Peter Rabbit, then a mermaid and finally a dancer, and her ballet teacher supported her to focus on the latter.
After a career in performing arts, during which time she was a soloist for the Vienna Ballet, Emma returned to Australia to direct and teach at The Brighton Dance Academy. She retired from teaching dance to follow her passion for picture books by creating stories that inspire children to dream big with compassionate hearts.
Emma is the author of companion picture books The Lion in our Living Room and The Bear in our Backyard and has illustrated numerous picture books including The Dream Bird and If You Meet an Elephant.
Emma enjoys sharing her love of stories through talks, presentations and children’s performances. She believes that children nourished with creativity will become the visionaries of the next generation, and few experiences have the power to feed the imagination as richly as reading and storytelling.
Emma draws on her theatrical background to bring the ingredients of narrative to life. Children will experience and relate to character, drama, setting and a resolution in a fun-filled and highly interactive puppetry presentation based around the lion and bear from her picture books. Emma will discuss how her brand-new picture book You’ll Never Guess, was born out of the creative fusion of writing and performing, and a lucky volunteer will have the opportunity to test their guessing game skills with a curious creature and magical mystery bag. Be prepared to fire up the fun and foster bright imaginations.
